How to Take Care of Fresh Cut Flowers

1. Prepare the Vase

  • Clean the vase thoroughly with soap and warm water to remove any bacteria.

  • Fill the vase with lukewarm water (not hot or cold), about two-thirds full.

  • Add flower food (usually comes with bouquets) or make your own with:

    • 1 teaspoon sugar

    • 1 teaspoon bleach or vinegar

    • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

2. Trim the Stems

  • Cut about 1–2 inches off the bottom of each stem at a 45° angle using sharp scissors or pruning shears.

  • Cut underwater or immediately place in water to prevent air from entering the stem.

3. Remove Lower Leaves

  • Remove any leaves that will sit below the waterline in the vase. This prevents rotting and bacterial growth.

4. Position Carefully

  • Place flowers in a cool spot, away from:

    • Direct sunlight

    • Heat sources (radiators, electronics)

    • Fruits (they release ethylene gas, which speeds aging)

5. Daily Care

  • Check water levels daily; flowers drink a lot!

  • Change the water every 2–3 days.

  • Re-trim stems and clean the vase during each water change.

  • Add more flower food with each water refresh.

6. Bonus Tips

  • Mist petals lightly with water for extra hydration.

  • Remove wilted flowers promptly to prevent bacteria from spreading.
